Mike Chick lives in Arlington Virginia with his wife and children. His criminal trial practice began as an assistant public defender in Fairfax, Virginia, where he successfully handled a countless number of serious felonies, misdemeanors, and traffic criminal matters. As a public defender, Mike was in court almost every day for a number of years, and he was lucky during that time to work alongside and to try cases against some of the best criminal trial lawyers in Northern Virginia. Eventually, he transitioned into what is considered by many to be one of the premier criminal trial firms in Virginia and the D.C. Metropolitan area, Greenspun Shapiro, PC. There, Mike continued to handle his own caseload, and he was fortunate to also work closely with, be mentored by, and try cases alongside Peter Greenspun and Jonathan Shapiro. Mike also served as a trial attorney with the Capital Defender’s Office of Northern Virginia, where he handled exclusively capital murder cases for clients facing the possibility of the death penalty. Mike still commits himself to capital murder death penalty cases and other serious criminal matters. His experience in capital litigation gives him a unique and useful perspective in representing his other criminal clients. Mike is also committed to using his position as a lawyer to serve others, and accordingly, he acts not only as retained/hired counsel for those who can afford his services, but also as a court-appointed attorney for indigent defendants who cannot otherwise afford a lawyer.
Mike loves parkour and rock climbing, and has appeared on multiple seasons of the hit NBC television show AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR to show off his skills, holding the distinction as a national finalist for both the NBC show and the National Ninja League. In his spare time, Mike serves as a youth wrestling coach and is very active at his church, Grace Community Church, in Arlington, VA, where he serves as a guitarist, singer and worship leader.
Born and raised in Virginia, Mike is a member of the Fairfax Bar Association, the Arlington County Bar Association. He was elected as a board member of the Young Lawyers Section of the Fairfax Bar in 2008 and has since finished that tenure. He served on the FBA's Legislative, J&DR and General District Court Committees and he has spoken at a number of criminal law events and at local law schools including Georgetown University, George Washington University, and George Mason University. In 2012, Mike was pleased to accept an invitation to become a Barrister member of the George Mason American Inn of Court. He has tried a number of cases before both judges and juries and has handled a variety of matters on the appellate level. In 2013, Mike was named a Rising Star by Super Lawyers magazine, and he has been listed multiple times by Washingtonian Magazine as one of the top criminal lawyers in the Washington, D.C. Metro area.
Mike received his Juris Doctor from The George Washington University Law School and his Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education and History from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. While in law school Mike was a member of GWU's Mock Trial Board and was selected to represent his school in the National Trial Competition. During this time, he also gained criminal experience clerking for the Federal Public Defender's Office in the District of Columbia. Prior to entering law school, Mike worked as a legal assistant for the law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York City. While in law school, Mike also worked for the Washington, D.C. law office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom.
